A family took their frail, elderly mother to a nursing home and left her,
hoping she would be well cared for. The next morning, the nurses bathed her,
fed her a tasty breakfast, and set her in a chair at a window overlooking a
lovely flower garden. She seemed okay, but after a while she slowly started
to tilt sideways in her chair. Two attentive nurses immediately rushed up to
catch her and straighten her up. Again she seemed okay, but after a while

and once  more brought her back upright. This went on all morning.  Later,

आये दिन आज भी दहेज़ प्रथा के किस्से अखबारों के ज़रिये पढ़े व सुने जाते हैं जिसमे दहेज़ के कारण आज भी कई लड़कियों को ज़िंदा जलाया जाता है, उसे बहुत टार्चर किया जाता है, उनका जीना मुहाल कर दिया जाता है और ये सब मेरी बरदाश्त से बाहर है., बहुत गुस्सा आता है मुझे. आखिर लड़कियों को भी जीने का उतना ही अधिकार है जितना कि लड़को को. तो फिर क्यों उन्हें शांति और सुकून से नहीं जीने नहीं दिया जाता. मै भी एक लड़की हूँ और मै भी इन हालातो से गुजर चुकी हूँ पर उस वक़्त मुझमे इतनी हिम्मत नहीं थी कि समाज के सामने लड़ सकूँ लेकिन आज कलम के ज़रिये मै एक लड़की की हालत को सबके दिलो तक पहुँचाना चाहती हूँ. ये दहेज प्रथा तो उन लालची इंसानों ने उत्पन्न की है जो पैसे के लिये लड़की के माता पिता का शोषण करते हैं जिसके कारण कितनी ही लड़कियां अपने जीवन से हाथ धो बैठती है

मेरे मित्रो, ध्यान रहे मै समाज के बने नीति-नियमो की बात नहीं कर रही. सचतो ये है कि दहेज-प्रथा, खास करके अमीर लोग, को बढ़ावा देते हैं. वे अपनी बेटीको आशीर्वाद के नाम पे ढेर सारी धन-संपत्ति व कीमती सामग्री देते है.पर वे ये नहीं जानते कीइसके कारण समाज का माहौल खराब होता है. सीमित आय वाले लोग भी दहेज के दुष्चक्र के शिकार हो जाते हैं. इस सबके परिणाम स्वरूप कितनी लड़कियों की जान जा रही है.अभी कुछ महीने पहले की ही धटनाहै. माता-पिता ने एक बेटी की बहुत धूमधाम से शादी की. वो अपने ससुराल गयी. कितनेअरमान, कितने सपने सजाए होंगेउस दुल्हन ने पर वो ख़ुशी ज्यादा देर तक नहीं टिकी. ससुरालमें कदम रखते ही ससुराल वालो ने कुछ और चीज़ो की मांग की. पर उस लड़की नेअपने माता-पिता को कुछ नहीं बताया और एक ही वीक में उसके जीवन का करूण अंतहुआ. जी हा, उसके ससुराल वालोंने उसे एक रात ज़िंदा जला दिया और इस प्रकार उस लड़की कीकहानी का दुखद अंत हो गया.
कहा जाकर रुकेगी ये दहेज-प्रथा की भयानक तस्वीरें. बसकरो अब बहुत हुआ हुआ . इसके लिये समाज के सभी वर्गों, विशेष रूप से आज की पीढ़ी से, हमारा नम्रनिवेदन है कि इस स्थिति की भयानकता को समझें और दहेज-प्रथा रूपी इस लानत को जड़मूल से समाप्त करने की दिशा में कारगर क़दम उठायें तथा बेटे और बेटियों के बीच किये जाने वाले भेद-भाव को खत्म करने की दिशा में अपने प्रयत्न तब तक जारी रखे जब तक कि इस समस्या समूल नष्ट नहीं हो जाती.
